Would you like to develop and implement visions and strategies for health-science research? Are you an internationally oriented researcher with leadership ambitions? Then one of the most attractive positions at the Faculty of Health at Aarhus University can be yours from 1 May 2020.

As the vice-dean for research, you will become part of the faculty’s senior management team where we promote an open, inclusive and trustful work environment. Our current major focus areas include recruitment and career development, diversity and internationalisation, external funding of new initiatives and implementation of the faculty’s visions for restructured educational programmes.

You will collaborate with leaders from the five departments, the Faculty’s administration, and the Dean’s office to develop an academically ambitious faculty. Your particular strategic role is to set the standard for a research framework that will ensure and promote the quality, integrity and international impact of the Faculty’s combined research efforts, while also recognizing the values of research-based study programmes.

You will also collaborate with the vice-deans for research from the four other faculties to develop and implement initiatives that support the strategic aims of Aarhus University.

Your day-to-day work will be supported by the Dean’s Secretariat, the Faculty’s administrative staff functions, and the university’s research support unit.

Your main tasks include:

  • Strategic management of the faculty’s research activities in collaboration with the department management teams and the graduate school.
  • Develop and implement initiatives that increase the quality and impact of the research and are meaningful for the academic environments.
  • Strengthen and maintain the framework for creative and inspirational research environments with extensive diversity and international impact.
  • Develop the framework for recruitment and development of researchers.
  • Promote the establishment of state-of-the-art research infrastructures.
  • Develop research networks within and across the main areas, and to support the establishment of interdisciplinary research initiatives.
  • Build bridges to partners, the business community, government agencies and private foundations with a view to increasing innovation and value creation for all parties.
  • Help secure increased external funding for research.
  • Participate in internal and external councils and committees within the field of research.
  • Work with the rest of the Aarhus University management team to continue our development as an international top university that addresses major societal challenges.

Visionary and experienced researcher
You have experience as a researcher and research leader within the faculty’s academic areas and you want to develop further your leadership potential. You are familiar with the special framework and conditions for collaboration between the university and hospitals on research and education, and you have experience with peer reviews of research proposals.

You are open, curious and approachable, and can fill a visible leadership position with many contacts and interactions. Your focus is on implementation and concrete, measurable results. You are visionary, innovative and committed, and believe in the value of promoting cultural and gender diversity. You can communicate clearly and constructively in verbal and written English, and preferably at least one of the Scandinavian languages. You have experience from working in academic and political fora at universities and/or in the healthcare system.

The faculty in brief
Health is one of five faculties at Aarhus University and consists of five departments. We cover core health science research and education within medical and dental programmes, as well as sports science and public health science, and strive to bring the subject areas together to reflect the close relationship between the university and the healthcare system. The faculty has a unique, close and long-term collaboration with hospitals in the Central Denmark Region, in particular Aarhus University Hospital, where many employees have a shared employment.

In 2018, Health was behind 3,604 research publications and attracted just over half a billion Danish kroner in external research funding. The faculty’s finances are in balance, and annual revenues are approx. DKK 1.4 billion. Appointment procedure
The position is a fixed-term employment for a period of up to six years with the option to extend the period for an additional three years. We offer assistance to relocate your family, if relevant.

The appointment procedure entails setting up an advisory group and an appointment committee.

Interviews are expected to be held on 28 January 2020 (1st round) and 24 February 2020 (2nd round). Applicants who go on will take in a manager profile test after the first round of interviews.
