Dette job er udløbet

The Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences (SUND) at the University of Copenhagen is seeking 14 highly motivated and dynamic postdoc fellows to commence the BRIDGE – Translational Excellence Programme on 1 September 2023. Fellows will be appointed for a period of two years and receive an annual sum of DKK 50.000 to cover costs for PC, travel, conference and workshop participation, language courses and other activities outside the programme.

The BRIDGE – Translational Excellence Programme is financed by the Novo Nordisk Foundation with the ambition to train fellows in the area of translational medicine, mentored by fully committed and top level professionals in basic biomedical research, a clinical environment and the life science industry. The programme constitutes a clear career path for candidates whose ambition is to bridge the gap between research, patient care and the life science industry and for those wishing to become pioneering leaders in the field of translational medicine.

The BRIDGE – Translational Excellence Programme expects to appoint 7 fellows with an MD background and 7 fellows with an MSc background.

Application deadline is 28 February 2023. Appointed fellows are expected to participate in a two-day Boot Camp on 7-8 September 2023. Mentors are expected to participate on 7 September 2023.

There are three steps in the application process:

1. Match with a Mentor Team
Matching with a Mentor Team is the first step in the application process.

If you are in contact with a Mentor Team, we recommend that you simply:

Have the Mentor Team constellation preapproved in due time before application deadline on 28 February 2023 by sending a request w/ Mentor Team CV’s to bridge@sund.ku.dk and follow step 2 and 3.

If you are not already in contact with an eligible Mentor Team we recommend that you:

  1. Contact basic, clinical and/or life science researchers in your network from the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences (UCPH), from hospitals in Region Zealand or Capital Region of Denmark and/or from the life science industry who fulfil the programme requirements to form a translational Mentor Team, or
  2. Alternatively, browse through the list of project synopses and find a Mentor Team that fits your research interest and thus contact the Mentor Team to explore the possibility of a collaboration. The list will be published on the BRIDGE website on 15 December 2022.

If you are an applicant without former or current ties to the Faculty or hospitals in either of the two regions, please browse the Departments and Centres at the Faculty and navigate to the department/center that fits your research area, and reach out to relevant basic scientific staff who fulfil the requirements of a mentor (Associate Professor or Professor, basic sciences). Likewise, you may browse through Regions’ and hospital’s staff pages to seek out a clinical mentor.

Please search for a researcher using the search engine at the Capital Region of Denmark and Region Zealand, or explore the hospital’s own pages on research groups and clinical researchers here:

Rigshospitalet, Amager and Hvidovre Hospital, Danish Cancer Society Research Center, Frederiksberg and Bispebjerg Hospital, Herlev and Gentofte Hospital, Mental health services in the Capital Region of Denmark (Psykiatrien), Nordsjællands Hospital & Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen, Region Zealand.

2. Develop your project description and budget
When you have successfully matched with a Mentor Team you must co-design a detailed project description and a budget for the project. This part of your application is called Part 1. The budget should be merged with Part 3 supplementary documents.

Part 2 of your application must be developed by the fellow candidate individually.

3. Submit your application
The last step is to submit your application.

You will find all the needed templates under ‘Templates’ below.
Your application must be submitted via HR Manager. Please find the link under ‘Apply now’ below when the application portal is open.

Part 1: Project description (to be co-developed with the mentor team)
The project description should be developed in collaboration with your mentor team and consist of five pages, including figures but excluding references. The description must be in English and include:

  • Project description: Describe the project’s hypotheses and objectives in the context of the state-of-the-art of the field, the potential for scientific progress, the consistency of project problem statement, the translational nature of the project and the originality and (societal) relevance of the research question
  • Impact: Describe the research project’s potential for translational impact and potential to create added value for the life science industry, the contribution to the fellow’s future career path, and plans for dissemination and communication of the research project’s findings
  • Implementation: Timeline, methodology, translational environment, ethics and budget

Part 2: Project abstract and CV (to be developed independently by the applicant)
The project abstract and CV must be developed independently by the applicant and consist of five pages including figures/tables. The project abstract and CV must be in English and include:

  • Project abstract, lay summary and personal statement
  • CV of the applicant including bibliometric summary and a full list of publications

Calculation guide for bibliometric summary generated by Web of Science (H-index).

Part 3: Supplementary documents

  • A signed budget (use BRIDGE template, and note that it must be signed by all head of departments)
  • A mentor CV per mentor (use BRIDGE template)
  • Two letters of recommendation (e.g. from current or previous supervisors, employers or collaborators)
  • Applicant’s PhD diploma (or letter from supervisor stating that the PhD is defended before 1 Sept 2023)
  • Applicant’s MD or MSc diploma or equivalent
  • Applicant’s MD or MSc grade transcript or equivalent

Applications (Part 1, Part 2 and Part3) must be submitted online and via the link ‘Apply now’ below or via the UCPH job announcement page no later than 28 February 2023, 23:59 CET. Part 1 is uploaded under ‘cover letter’ (no additional cover letter is needed), and part 2 and 3 can be uploaded under ‘other documents’.

We reserve the right to disregard material received after the application deadline along with applications and application material that do not comply with the above-mentioned criteria.

The BRIDGE – Translational Excellence Programme provides fellows with the ability to translate insights from basic research into the clinical sciences and/or the life science industry, and vice versa, and the competences to manage essential collaboration between disciplines.

The Academic Curriculum tied to the programme covers the translational stages T0 (Population/clinic to lab feedback, Disease modelling -omic studies, Basic research), T1 (Biomarker discovery, Target development, Pre-clinical development) and border to early T2 (First in human, Phase 1 clinical trials, Phase 2 clinical trials, Phase 2b clinical trials).

Job description
Appointed fellows spend 80% of their time on individual translational research projects mentored by a Mentor Team consisting of a basic biomedical scientist from a SUND Department or Centre, and a clinical scientist from a hospital in the Capital Region of Denmark or Region Zealand, and/or from the life science industry. The fellows spend 20% of their time on a mandatory Academic Curriculum that covers the translational stages T0 to early T2 in addition to generic skills such as research management, ethics, research communication and successful grant writing. Please find more information about the BRIDGE Academic Curriculum. The BRIDGE fellow is obliged to attend a comprehensive course programme, which constitute 20% of their position, and should therefore not be imposed teaching obligation during their fellowship.

A life science industry mentor is highly encouraged to enter the Mentor Team, if relevant.

Incorporating a mentor from a basic biomedical science environment at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, UCPH, into the Mentor Team is mandatory. If a life science industry mentor acts as a third mentor – accompanying a basic and clinical mentor – that mentor may reside outside Denmark.

Mentor Team without a designated postdoc candidate have to register by submitting the ‘Mentor CV template’ for all mentors involved and a ‘Project synopsis template’ for mentors to the BRIDGE Secretariat at bridge@sund.ku.dk by 30 November 2022. Please read more mentor information.
