Aarhus University Hospital is the largest hospital in Denmark. And Department of Respiratory Diseases and Allergy is one of the broadest departments inside the pulmonary field in Denmark. Department of Respiratory Diseases and Allergy has activity inside the field of COPD including evaluation for valve treatment for emphysema and evaluation for lung transplantation, lung cancer including advanced endoscopic activities with EBUS/EUS, super dimension bronchoscopy and cryo biopsy. The department has activities inside the field of advanced dyspnea evaluation and evaluation for asthma. The department has a large area of activity inside the field of interstitial and cystic lung diseases. Moreover the department treats patients with tuberculosis, environmental mycobacteria and fungal infections.

The department is headed by a department management team which consists of a head consultant and a head nurse.

Positions for medical doctors in the department include one head consultant and eight consultants. In addition to this there are six specialty registrars and 17 medical doctors who are at different levels of their postgraduate training.

The department cross covers for physicians on duty and physicians on call in the section of medical pre-admission and the medical casualty department.

In the department an intense culture of learning prevails; all staff members are obliged to participate actively as teachers and to have further training. Training in the department includes e.g. pre-graduate teaching of medical students for which four clinical associate professors are at present employed. Medical post-graduate training comprises: medical doctors receiving specialty training, introduction to internal medicine/pulmonary medicine and professional in internal medicine/pulmonary medicine. Furthermore, the department participates in other post-graduate training and supplementary education of medical doctors as well as of other personnel groups.

Everyone in the department is obliged to stimulate and participate in an active research environment. The areas of research include e.g: interstitial lung diseases, cryobiopsies, lung cancer, tuberculosis, allergy and inflammation, allergy treatment, asthma, and COPD.

Working as a senior consultant in Denmark requires Danish language skills. If these are not present in the applicant we will arrange education in Danish speaking and writing.

On-call duty: The consultant is expected to participate in rotating on-call duty schedule. The on-call duty is mainly advices given on phone and can therefore be handled from home.
 
Managerial reporting: The consultant will be part of the management team of the department. The consultant reports to the department management of the Department of Respiratory Medicine and Allergy.
 
Clinical functions: The consultant

• shares the medical responsibility with the other consultants.
• participates part-time in the clinical work in the department. Chooses unit according to area of interest.
• participates in clinical work in other units than the primary unit as required.
• attends to supervisory and consultancy services in other departments at Aarhus University Hospital together with the other department consultants.

Research, quality and development

• Through daily work in the unit the consultant is expected to influence continued development of the unit in co-operation with the department nurse and reporting to the department management.
• The consultant is expected to participate actively in department research. A large number of patients with many diverse pulmonary disorders visit the department. Based on that, the potential of research projects is vast.
• The consultant is expected to participate actively in the development of co-operative relations to other areas of specialization.

Teaching/education

• The consultant is expected to participate in teaching medical students, medical doctors and other groups of professionals both internally and externally.

The medical expert: The consultant must be a pulmonary medicine specialist.
 
Manager/administrator: Assertiveness is an important characteristic, and the applicant will promote the implementation of organizational changes. The consultant is not expected to have received management training, but together with the consultant, a plan for the development of management skills will be made.
 
Scholar: It is important that the consultant possesses research-related experience, an interest in and a will to support an active scientific environment. As the position as senior consultant is combined with the position as Clinical Professor special requirements has to be met.
 
Communicator: It is important to be an experienced educator of medical students, medical doctors and other groups of professionals.
 
Collaborator: It is important to have excellent co-operation skills, to be able to make decisions and to be assertive, loyal, open and robust.

Professional: It is important to have a professional approach to the medical profession as well as knowledge of and respect for legal and ethical aspects of medical work.

Health promoter: Within the medical specialty of pulmonary medicine, prevention plays an important part. Experience in health promotion is an advantage.
