A permanent clinical position as consultant of Cardiology at the Department of Cardiology at Zealand University Hospital, Roskilde is open for appointment from as soon as possible.

The position is combined with a permanent position as clinical professor of Cardiology at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.

With this new position the Department of Cardiology, Zealand University Hospital wishes to strengthen the leadership in clinical research and teaching in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen.

It is a requirement that the applicant is accepted for appointment of both the professorship and the consultancy.

About the Department

Organisation

The Department of Cardiology (Kardiologisk Afdeling) in Roskilde and Køge at Zealand University Hospital have joint management, but the staff members have their main employment at either Roskilde or Køge Hospital. The members of staff account to about 250, among which there are 30 consultants, 4 fellows and 16 residents. Besides clinical cardiology and echocardiography, the Department is regionally responsible for coronary angiography, pacemaker treatment, management of valvular heart disease, endocarditis and investigation of GUCH. In addition it offers genetic counselling of certain hereditary diseases as well as highly specialised treatments like elective PCI and ICD treatment. The Department has 56 beds located at three wards. In 2015 the department had 25.000 outpatient contacts, 3.000 coronary angiographies, 1000 PCI and FFR measurements and 700 pacemaker operations. The total production was 16.000 in-hospital days and 5.000 discharges. Coronary angiography and PCI activities are planned to expand further. Electrophysiology and radiofrequency treatment is planned to start in 2017. The catherisation laboratory has 5 examination-rooms with modern X-ray equipment used for angiography, PCI and pacemaker implantations, including ICD. The catherisation laboratory has video-connectivity to Rigshospitalet, Odense University Hospital and local cardiological clinics in the Region of Zealand.

Clinical functions and focus areas of the department

Currently, many regional functions and specialised functions in a variety of fields are gathered at Zealand University Hospital. The clinical specialties include all subspecialties of internal medicine and haematology, oncology, neurology, urology, orthopaedics and abdominal surgery. The Department offers specialist assessment of cardiological issues to the other departments of the Hospital as well as to the acute triage section. The Department in Roskilde equally offers cardiological assistance to the other hospitals of the Region Zealand and receives cardiological patients from those hospitals upon referral. Video-medical service between the hospitals of the Region is established to support this coordinated function, which can also draw upon the digital echo-network of the Region.

Research and teaching

With the new position as consultant in Cardiology and clinical professor of Cardiology, the Department of Cardiology at Zealand University Hospital wishes to strengthen leadership in clinical research and teaching. The research activities of the Department are increasing, especially in the fields of invasive investigation and treatment of ischemic heart disease, cardiac arrhythmia and related device treatment, heart failure investigation and treatment, valvular disease investigation and treatment, endocarditis, cardiac rehabilitation and patient involvement. Currently we have one PhD student, 1 post-doc (nurse), 7 study nurses and several research-active physicians. The Department is most concerned about offering an attractive educational environment. The medical students consistently appraise their clinical residency / training at the Department as very good.

Qualifications

Applicants must be board-certified specialist in Cardiology

The consultant we are looking for has special expertise and research interests preferably within ischemic heart disease, heart failure, cardiac arrhythmia or valvular disease including infectious endocarditis. The consultant will be assigned to work within one of the teams of the Department relevant to his/hers clinical profile and research interests. The consultant will be expected to heighten the level of the research of the Department to that of a high international standard within the field of Cardiology and to promote the professional level of the execution of the clinical services of the Department. The consultant will be in charge of the clinical research of the Department and will be responsible for the related priority setting, clinical innovation, project development, sector wide and inter-specialty collaboration, implementation and communication of results. The vacancy is open to a senior consultant qualified specialist in Cardiology. Emphasis will be put on a broad education supplemented with a professional and academic profile matching the functions of the Department. The successful applicant will be expected to have interest in training of medical students, residents, fellows and other staff groups. The vacancy is planned without evening and night duties, but participation in these duties is possible at the applicant’s request.

Conditions: In order to be considered, the applicant must send an application to both the Faculty (the professorship) and to the hospital (the consultancy) cf. the simultaneously advertised position of the professorship. Appointment is conditioned by the fact that the applicant obtains both positions. This also applies to the applicants who are already employed as consultants at Zealand University Hospital.

Salary and conditions of employment as consultant are as agreed between the Danish Regions and the Danish Association of Medical Specialists and between the Capital Region/Region Zealand and University of Copenhagen.

As clinical professor at least 50 % of the working time will be allocated to academic tasks (e.g. research, teaching, evaluation tasks and communication with the public) in agreement with the Head of Department of Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Copenhagen. The remaining time will be allocated for clinical work in agreement with the head of Department of Cardiology. The clinical professor will receive secretarial or technical support equivalent to 50 % of a full time secretary position from the department of Cardiology. Additional support and details on the working conditions must be negotiated with the head of the department of Cardiology, Zealand University Hospital.
