Consultancy in Clinical Oncology combined with a Clinical Professorship in Clinical Oncology with special focus on Clinical Oncological Research

A position as consultant of clinical oncology at the Department of Clinical Oncology at Zealand University Hospital is open for appointment from as soon as possible.

The position is combined with a 5-year externally funded position as clinical professor of Clinical Oncology with special focus on Clinical Oncological Research at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.

With this new professorship, the Department of Clinical Oncology at Zealand University Hospital wishes to strengthen the leadership in clinical research and teaching in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen.

It is a requirement that the applicant is accepted for appointment of both the professorship and the consultancy.

In order to be considered, the applicant must send an application to both the Faculty (the professorship) and to the hospital (the consultancy) cf. the simultaneously advertised position of the professorship. ABOUT THE REGION

The Region of Zealand has about 800,000 citizens. Citizens are offered health services from four somatic hospitals: Zealand University Hospital, based in Roskilde and Køge, Holbæk Hospital, Næstved-Slagelse-Ringsted Hospital and Nykøbing Falster Hospital. Each of these hospitals has its own hospital administration.

Zealand University Hospital has a total of 753 beds. The branch in Roskilde is a specialised hospital and the branch in Køge is an emergency Hosptial and the future mail site for the university hospital. With the future expansion of Køge Hospital starting in 2016, Køge Hospital will be assigned larger areas of specialisation and special functions that will contribute to Køge Hospital becoming Zealand University Hospitals main hospital. The number of beds in Køge will be increased from the current 300 to 835, and extensive capabilities will be developed for ambulatory activities, as well as plans for the most mordern technology and large areas dedicated to research, among other initiatives. Zealand University Hospital is a part of Copenhagen University Hospital, a co-operation between the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen and the hospitals of the Capital Region of Denmark and Region Zealand.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Organisation

The Department of Clinical Oncology (Klinisk Onkologisk Afdeling) in Roskilde and Næstved at Zealand University Hospital have joint management, but the staff members have their main employment at either Roskilde or Næstved Hospital. The members of staff account to about 330, among which there are 20 consultants, 3 fellows and 10 residents.

Besides medical oncology and radiotherapy, the Department is responsible for palliative care in the majority of the Region. Palliative Care Units are present in Roskilde, Køge, Næstved, Slagelse and Nykøbing, and palliative beds in Roskilde and Næstved.

The Departments radiotherapy clinic with its five Varian accelerators is located in Næstved. It was throughoutly renovated and expanded in 2015 and stands with all new equipment today, including CT, MR and PET scanners. The radiotherapy clinic has approximately 30.000 visits (radiation fractions) per year. By 2020 the radiotherapy clinic will move to Zealand University Hospital in Køge where the clinic is planned to comprise of 8 accelerators.

The medical oncology clinics are located in Roskilde and Næstved. In 2015 the medical oncology clinics in Roskilde and Næstved had 23000 respectively 35000 outpatient contacts. Both doctors and nurse staff are organized in specialized diagnostic teams and work in close collaboration with the related specialities through daily multidisciplinary team conferences (MDT).

The Department of Clinical Oncology embrace a total of 47 beds. 35 beds are dedicated to clinical oncology and consists of 17 beds in Roskilde and 18 beds in Næstved, treating approximately 2500 hospitalized patients per year. 12 beds are dedicated to specialized palliative care and consists of 10 beds in Roskilde and 2 beds in Næstved.In addition, the department is responsible for the medical treatment at two hospices in the Region, were we supply 26 hospice beds with specialized palliative care consultants.

Clinical functions and focus areas of the department

Department of Clinical Oncology at Zealand University Hospital is in a progress of rapid growth and development. The department was founded in 2015 by a fusion of four minor departments, with the overall purpose to construct a fully integrated and highly specialized department by 2022. By that time, the department will move to the new hospital in Køge, and functions that are located in different locations today will unite in one large Department of Clinical Oncology and Palliative Care. The department is the only oncological department in Region Zealand.

Currently, the department offers integrated medical oncology, radiotherapy and palliative care treatment for:

  • Breast cancer
  • Colorectal cancer
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Lung cancer
  • Cancer of the head and neck
  • Ovarian- and endometrial cancer
  • Prostate cancer and bladder cancer

In addition, hematologic disorders treated with radiotherapy in collaboration with the Department of Haematology.

The list of treatments offered is expected to further increase in 2017.

Research and teaching

With the new position as consultant in clinical oncology and clinical professor of clinical oncology, the Department of Clinical Oncology at Zealand University Hospital wishes to strengthen leadership in clinical research and teaching.The departments has an integrated Clinical Research Unit comprising eight clinical research nurses managing a long list of research protocols. Protocols are a mix of:

  • Fase II/III drug trials in collaboration with the medical industry
  • Investigator initiated clinical trials in national / international collaboration
  • Local investigator initiated trials
  • Innovation-driven test trials supported by the EU Interreg program

The research activities of the Department are increasing, especially in the fields of radiotherapy and innovation. Currently we have one PhD student, 1 post-doc (nurse), besides the 8 study nurses and several research-active physicians.The Department has a high priority in offering high quality clinical training for medical students and residents. The medical students consistently appraise their clinical residency / training at the Department as very good.

Qualifications

The consultant we are looking for has special expertise and research interests within clinical oncology and within one of the diagnostic areas that is embraced by the department.

The consultant will be assigned to work within one of the teams of the department relevant to his/hers clinical profile and research interests.

The consultant will be expected to heighten the level of the research of the department to that of a high international standard within the field of clinical oncology and to promote the professional level of the execution of the clinical services of the department. The consultant will be in charge of the clinical research of the department and will be responsible for the related priority setting, clinical innovation, project development, sector wide and inter-specialty collaboration, implementation and communication of results.

The vacancy is open to a senior consultant qualified specialist in clinical oncology or to senior consultant qualified specialist internal medicine with documented sub specialization in clinical oncology. Emphasis will be put on a broad education supplemented with a professional and academic profile matching the functions of the department.

The successful applicant will be expected to have interest in training of medical students, residents, fellows and other staff groups.

The vacancy is planned without evening and night duties, but participation in these duties is possible at the applicant’s request.

The position will include both Roskilde and Næstved departments. The clinical profile of the applicant will guide decisions regarding the primary site of employment.

Conditions

Only applicants for the position as clinical professor of clinical oncology at University of Copenhagen can apply for this position. Appointment is conditioned by the fact that the applicant applies for and obtains both positions.

Salary and conditions of employment as consultant are as agreed between the Danish Regions and the Danish Association of Medical Specialists and between the Capital Region/Region Zealand and University of Copenhagen.

As clinical professor at least 50 % of the working time will be allocated to academic tasks (e.g. research, teaching, evaluation tasks and communication with the public) in agreement with the Head of Department of Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Copenhagen. The remaining time will be allocated for clinical work in agreement with the head of the Department of Clinical Oncology at Zealand University Hospital. The clinical professor will receive secretarial or technical support equivalent to 50 % of a full time secretary position from the Department of Clinical Oncology. Additional support and details on the working conditions must be negotiated with the head of the Department of Clinical Oncology at Zealand University Hospital.
